#EndSARS, Youths, Violence And The Lekki Massacre

Are the Nigerian youths to be blamed for the violence?

President Muhammadu Buhari’s recent nationwide speech concerning the crisis that has engulfed the country seemed not to touch on the wounds of the nation. Many expected the president to have mentioned the Lekki massacre perpetrated by ‘unknown’ soldiers at the Lekki toll bridge.

There were indications that Buhari, during his speech, may also have pointed fingers at the youths for the recent violence. According to a report from the Daily Times of Nigerian, the president had a meeting with former Nigerian leaders and he told them, ”Unfortunately, the protesters refused to call off the protest and engage the Government to address their grievances. Instead, they became emboldened and gradually turned violent.”

With the backdrop of the President’s speech, a Twitter user who calls himself @hujaj19, recently made the statement, “How The Youths Were Deliberately Plunged Into Violence.”

He was in support of Buhari, citing the mayhem from the #EndSARS protest, which degenerated into violence with hoodlums taking advantage. He tweeted that certain popular musicians and personalities lured the youths into the horrendous Lekki massacre. He listed a few names below :

The tweet created a whirlwind of backlash as members of the Twitter community were not pleased with this comment.

@chukwosome4 said, “Big fool, make i help you add some names too. wizkid, davido, run town, fall, Dr. Joe Abah, Don jazzy, and a whole lot of influencers.”

@IgbunnuLee tweeted, “Oga they did what your generation couldn’t do. You all stayed still and swallowed the nonsense this government and past ones fed you.

@MaziNnamdiKanu, leader of IPOB, provocatively sent on Twitter, “I’ve been telling you this; now even foreigners are aware that after recruiting the so-called ‘repentant’ TERRORISTS into the Army, the embattled @NGRPresident is now recruiting them into DSS to KILL #EndSARS protesters.”

@hujaj19’s tweets came as a response to an earlier tweet by Oby Ezekwisili, @obyzeks. Obiageli “Oby” Ezekwesili was appointed Vice President for the World Bank’s Africa Region in 2007.  Hear her, “Dear young compatriots of #EndSARS, I feel compelled to let you know that NOTHING in that out-of-touch speech of our @NGRPresident, @MBuhari invalidates the great progress you helped our Democracy make in the 12 days you conducted a most effective peaceful protest in Nigeria/1.”

She also applauded the Nigerian youths saying,

“The world saw and applaud your peaceful #EndSARS protests. It will forever be celebrated as a historical activation of the #OfficeOfTheCitizen in our democracy.

No amount of distorted narrative by @NGRPresident can taint your well-conducted peaceful protests.
You inspired it!✍🏾

The world followed your peaceful protests with huge interest and delight with many awed at your organizational effectiveness.

The world saw when @NigeriaGov incompetently handled your agitation, used the police to brutalize you on protest grounds, enabled thugs to attack you.

Mrs. Ezekwesili noted that events had changed since armed soldiers opened fire on the peaceful protesters at the Lekki toll gate, on Tuesday evening. In the words of Femi Fani-Kayode, “Nigeria has never witnessed a generation of youths that are as courageous as the ones of today. Just when many of us gave up on them they came out with a bang & brought a tyrant to his knees. They refused to blink even when they were faced with guns & slaughtered in the streets.”

Now that the soil is drunk to its fill of innocent blood; blood that now screams for justice, the narrative has certainly taken a truly dark twist. The citizenry now knows, which has never been hidden before, that our government is nothing but a, “Beast Of No Nation.” The citizenry now knows that the power of the people is far greater than that of a few elected power-drunk moguls. Demands for better security, better health care, better electric power service, better educational system, better roads, better housing, better pension and so on must be met, or else there will NEVER be another smile left on the face of this crocodile.

Still in doubt that soldiers shot and murdered innocent protesters, then watch the video.
